Radiating Light: In Memoriam of Shinya

Oh, fuck cancer! LUNA SEA’s drummer Shinya [真矢] has died on 17th of February, 2026, at the age of 56 after battling with cancer since 2020, leaving us in grief. Here is LUNA SEA’s obituary to which we would like to add some heartfelt, personal words.

The first day after the announcement of Shinya’s far too early death was marked by something I hadn’t expected to encounter: nostalgia.

I discovered Japanese music in the early stages of my adolescence. I was 13 or 14 when I found my first Japanese bands, and by the age of 16, much of my musical education had been shaped by Japanese artists – especially drummers: Shinya from DIR EN GREY, Naoki from Deathgaze, Yuu from NEGA, Tsukasa from D’ESPAIRSRAY, and many more. All of them were a huge influence on me. And all of them, in turn, were greatly influenced by Shinya and LUNA SEA. So when I read their posts and words about Shinya, their memories of growing up playing drums to ROSIER or STORM, I was reminded of myself, sitting behind my drum set, playing along to the songs of my own idols.

Music is often described as a ›universal language‹. It ignores borders, race, and age, and it allows you to feel things without even knowing where they come from or what they mean. Yet you feel them because they are exactly what you need in that moment. To me, Shinya was one of the best people on the planet at speaking that language purely through his drumming. No matter how sad or dark a LUNA SEA song felt, Shinya’s drumming always managed to embrace me with a welcoming warmth. I can’t fully explain how, but his drumming always felt like that single ray of sunlight, that falls through the curtains and warms your body the exact moment it reaches you. It was unique. It was special.
Now… I sadly never saw Shinya live in person, although it had always been a dream of mine. Even so, Shinya always felt like a force of nature to me – a force filled with an endless amount of positive energy that he shared with everyone through the universal language of music. And although he defined an entire generation of musicians, I strongly believe that his optimism and warmth will be the true legacy of Shinya Yamada.

LUNA SEA has been part of my Japanese music journey from the early on. I can pinpoint memorable moments of my life with LUNA SEA songs as my soundtrack, making pieces like GENESIS OF MIND ~Yume no Kanata he~ [GENESIS OF MIND～夢の彼方へ～] or LUV U part of my biography. I remember the bliss of every concert I was able to see them live after their reunion in 2010. And how sad I’ve been that we couldn’t get tickets for their what has been, at the time, LUNA SEA’s One Night Déjàvu on the 24th of December, 2007. Which was at that time, as I remember now, while writing these words, when my late mother got diagnosed with cancer.
LUNA SEA has always been an example of a strong band that can exist as a unit with five very strong members and everyone having the space to be in the spotlight, whether with the band or in solo projects. And drummer Shinya always seemed to radiate a smile and sweetness, bringing heart to an industry that is all too often cutthroat. It’s not just been his drumming, but also through the colors he used to bring to the stage, having plush toys in his bass drums, and so many more charming habits and traits.

Drummers are often the backbone of a band, but Shinya has also been the »eternal heartbeat« of the band, as LUNA SEA wrote in their announcement of his death. »His unyielding spirit and his radiant, sun-like smile had been a source of hope for the band members and our entire staff.« Shinya had a special talent to make people feel good way beyond the limits of the stage. We have lost a light that shines so bright it continues radiating warmth beyond its grave.
Shinya, you have left this world way too soon, but you’ll be unforgotten! We cherish your light, remembering what you have brought to LUNA SEA, your fans, the musicians you inspired, and most of all, your family and friends. As someone who is a light in my life is currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis, your death and thinking of your loved ones, hits particularly hard. May they come together in love and gratitude, finding comfort in the remembrance of the beautiful human you’ve been.
